The Downtown Tulsa Partnership (DTP) is seeking qualifications from experienced artists or artist teams for a large-scale, semi-permanent (10 years) public art installation in the E 4th Street Alley. Join 108|Contemporary for this workshop led by Sally Garner to learn about the unique sculptural aspects of basket weaving. This workshop is focused on exploring sculptural techniques used in basket weaving to create unexpected organic abstracted forms that will merge this traditionally functional craft with freeform object-making. In this class we will first talk about various basketry structures that create form and begin by sketching some ideas for our sculptures. We'll play with soaked and pliable basket reed, incorporating variations on traditional structures, such as random weave, coiling, and plain weave, as they pertain to freely expanding beyond traditional basket shapes. Due to the pace of this workshop, some basic knowledge of basket weaving is helpful, but not required. If you're coming to this workshop as a new basket weaver, expect to have an open mind on how your work may turn out, because we will see how sometimes the reed will direct the weaver, instead of the other way around. It is likely that participants will leave with a partially completed piece and the knowledge to continue working on it at home; however, some may be able to finish a piece or two within the timeframe of the workshop, depending on the complexity of each person's design and existing knowledge on basket weaving.
